24 Character Strengths: Creativity

We are all unique and we all have strengths which allow us to contribute to the world. In the early 2000’s, Dr. Martin Seligman and Dr. Christopher Peterson developed the VIA Character Strengths. Their research determined that there are 24 common character strengths that each of us possess to one degree or another, giving us a common language to use, but still recognizing that each of us is unique.

Each of these Character Strengths fall under one of six broad categories called Virtues. These Virtues and Character Strengths have proven to be universal across cultures and nations. Over the next few weeks, we will explore each of the 24 strengths that we all share, yet make you uniquely you!

We will start with the Virtue of Wisdom, which brings together those strengths used to gather and use knowledge.

CREATIVITY

The Character Strength of Creativity revolves around new ways of doing or thinking. It brings together originality and usefulness in ways that move life forward in positive directions. Often Creativity is thought of only in artistic spaces, but you can be creative in the way you do a household chore or accomplish a routine task.

When Creativity is absent we think of conformity or just going with what is. It's opposite is triteness or being repetitive to the point of not being useful anymore. In excess it can turn into eccentricity or originality beyond the point of usefulness. Understanding these opposites, absences and excesses can help us identify true Creativity in ourselves and in others. We all have the strength of Creativity and it is expressed by each of us in our own unique way.

Expressing our Creativity can sometimes be challenging. Creativity thrives in environments that are positive, supportive, open and casual. You may find it more difficult to bring a creative idea to the table in environments that are negative and judgmental or where extreme time constraints exist.

If you would like to build your Creativity strength (you do have it!), start from a happy, relaxed place. Try to avoid situations where you will feel under time pressure and remember that any strength improves with practice, practice and more practice. Most of all, make the choice to exercise you creativity and go for it!
