Thought for Today - October 25, 2023

It is better to live your own destiny imperfectly

than to live an imitation of somebody else's life with perfection

Elizabeth Gilbert, "Eat Pray Love"

We all traverse our journey of life, often finding ourselves at crossroads where the path of least resistance might be to simply follow in the footsteps of others. It seems easier, safer, and often more predictable. But is it fulfilling? "It is better to live your own destiny imperfectly than to live an imitation of somebody else's life with perfection." This sentiment urges us to embrace our authentic selves, to cherish our unique stories, and to honor our individual journeys.

Why strive for perfection in an imitation when you can have the raw, unfiltered beauty of being genuine? Living someone else's life might come with fewer mistakes, but it also comes with fewer lessons, fewer triumphs, and fewer instances of genuine joy. Our flaws, our mistakes, and our missteps – they're the brushstrokes in the grand painting of our lives. They add depth, character, and vibrancy to our story. Without them, our canvas remains bland, a mere replica of countless others.

Moreover, authenticity is liberating. When we chase someone else's dreams, we wear a mask, and masks are heavy. They weigh down on our spirits and cloud our vision. But living our destiny, even with its imperfections, allows us to breathe freely, to feel deeply, and to grow exponentially. It's in our unique challenges and victories that we find our true selves and realize our full potential.

So, the next time you feel the weight of external expectations or the allure of a seemingly perfect path someone else has paved, remember this: perfection is overrated. Embrace your imperfections, your quirks, and your journey. It's in the beautifully imperfect moments of your authentic life that you'll find the most profound happiness and fulfillment. After all, an original is always worth more than a copy, no matter how perfect that copy might seem.
