Relationships: Why Being Liked Isn't the Same as Having Influence

Being liked is not the same as having relationships that carry influence — you can be the most well-regarded person in the building and have almost no relational capital when it counts. The relationships that move things are trust banked before you need to withdraw it, and they have three parts: breadth in the right direction (toward the skeptic and the person two levels up, not just the team you already like), depth that’s been tested (you disagreed well, or delivered when it was hard, and the trust held), and generosity that came first (you gave before there was any return in sight). When it’s strong, you’re not influencing from authority — you’re influencing because a network of people trust you and will act on it.
