Taking the Blame Upstairs

The Buddy takes the hit. The project slips and he tells his boss it was his call, his timeline, his miss. His team loves him for it, and he thinks it is the most protective thing a leader can do. Look at what it actually does. The person who missed the deadline never hears that they missed it. The people above him never learn where the problem lives, so it never gets the help it needs. And the two people who covered the gap watch him protect the wrong person, again. Taking the blame is not shielding the team. It is shielding the problem.

Tomorrow: the Buddy from another angle.
