The Diplomat: What Your Team Experiences

The hardest thing I tell diplomats:

Your neutrality isn’t kindness. It’s protection.

If you never take a position, you can never be wrong. You can never be the reason someone’s upset. You never lose the approval that — somewhere along the way — became the thing you actually manage.

But your team can’t run on “both of you make good points.” They needed a decision, and you gave them a compliment.

Staying neutral feels generous. To the people waiting on you, it lands as abandonment.

Neutral is a position too. It’s just nobody’s.
