Her boss finally asks the question: what do you want next? It is the moment she has been waiting a year for. And she asks for a stretch project.
Not the role. Not the title she has been doing all along. A project, because a project feels reasonable and the role feels like too much to say out loud.
So she gets the project. Of course she does. People give you what you ask for, and they assume it is what you want. The Understudy keeps sizing her ask to the answer she expects. The move is to ask for the thing itself, and let them be the ones to negotiate down.
